Cracked promotional item with early work by Daniel Clowes, via the Flickr of Gonked, Glooked & Slurped:

After publishing the first “Uggly Family” story in “Cracked’s Extra-Special Monster Party #9,” Mort Todd encouraged readers to send a SASE in for a free unpublished UF portrait (see below). Can’t imagine many people did so—thankfully, my pal Howie was intrepid enough to throw his hat in the ring, and he traded this gem to me 28 years (!) later. The 11 x 17 portrait features an almost unrecognizable Clowes rendering of the Uggly Family.
Mort Todd sez: “that is indeed Dan’s very first interpretation of the Uggly’s before we named ‘em, even! I would do the writing and layouts myself, and as you see this was plugging their second appearance which tied in with some Wolverton reprints.”

Dan Clowes interpretation of Jack Bilbo’s “The Strange Story of the Invisible Torture” 2003/1946
From the awesome Glenn Bray “Blighted Eye” book by Fantagraphics.

I hadn’t heard of this book before but I think I will be buying it soon. It’s described on Amazon as: “The Blighted Eye showcases Glenn Bray’s extensive collection of original comic art by cartoonists such as R. Crumb, Matt Groening, Charles Addams, Charles Schulz, Dan Clowes, Chris Ware and many more.” You can see a few pages previewed on the Amazon listing, including a couple of pages with original art by Clowes:

Obscure Panel Comic Answer

danielclowesreader:

Yesterday on our tumblr for The Daniel Clowes Reader (available at fine bookstores everywhere!), we asked if anyone could identify the source of a seldom-seen Clowes image:

image

The answer: it’s a panel from an illustration/comic strip for a New Yorker piece from 2000. Here’s the full comic:

Do you know where it’s from?
(I’ll post the answer within a day if someone doesn’t get it.)

______________________________________________

1.The New Yorker cover guess is a good one, though not quite right …

2. Also a good guess from cartoonist Frank S. but also not right …

(It’s pretty obscure; I’ve been doing a little new year’s cleaning/organizing and finding some old files …)

(Is there a way to respond to notes directly?)

A Non-Mystery Sorta Solved?

danielclowesreader:

This Clowes piece recently changed hands on eBay:

image

The listing had no information about the art. But now it can be told! It’s a color pencil rough for an illustration that appeared in The New Yorker on August 5th, 2002. (The essay it accompanies is “The Naked Face” by Malcolm Gladwell.)

Here’s the printed version followed by a side-by-side comparison:
